SALT LAKE CITY â The tight end position at Utah took a major step forward in 2018 as several talented athletes added depth to the receiving game and additional protection to the offensive line.
On Friday, that talent was recognized as sophomore tight end Cole Fotheringham was named to the John Mackey Award preseason watchlist. The San Clemente, California, native is one of 60 tight ends around the nation included in the honor.
The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Fotheringham split reps at the tight position last season before taking the reigns as the No. 1 option at the position in spring. Fotheringham finished the 2018 season with 17 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns and having played in all 14 games.
Fotheringham is expected to be utilized well in an Andy Ludwig offense that generally has the tight end as one of the teamâs leading receivers. Fotheringham joins eight other members of the Pac-12 to be included in the preseason honor, as well as in-state rival BYUâs Matt Bushman.
The award, which will be given to the "most outstanding" tight end on Dec. 11, is selected by the John Mackey Award selection committee.
