SALT LAKE CITY ā The National College Football Awards Association released its first two 2019 watchlists Monday morning, and three Utah State players were included.
Quarterback Jordan Love, was named to the Maxwell Award watchlist, which is given to the college Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club. Love is one of 80 players named to the list and joins only four other Mountain West players who were nominated.
Love, a junior for the Aggies, is a second-team All-Mountain West player. Last season, he went 267-of-417 for 3,567 yards passing and had 32 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 63 yards on 43 carries.
Love passed for 300 yards in seven games last year and hit 400-yard passing games twice. He threw five touchdown passes in two different games and was responsible for 234 points during the season.
Love was previously named to the preseason first-team all-Mountain West team by Athlon Sports and Phil Steeleās Magazine.
Tipa Galeai and David Woodward, who were among 80 other players nationally, were named to the Bednarik Award, which is given to the college DefensivePlayer of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Galeai is a defensive end who was named to the second-team all-Mountain West in 2018 after playing in all 13 games. He ended the season with 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks and 14.0 tackles for loss. He led the team in forced fumbles (three) and quarterback hurries (seven). Additionally, Galeai had two interceptions, three pass breakups and one blocked kick last season.
Galeai is also on the preseason first-team all-Mountain West list put out by Athlon Sports and Phil Steeleās Magazine.
Woodward, a junior linebacker, started all 13 games in 2018 and collected first-team All-America honors from Pro Football Focus (PFF), as well as third-team All-America honors from The Associated Press. Woodward wrapped up the season with 134 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, three pass breakups and four quarterback hurries.
After 2018, Woodward was named the PFF Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and his 134 tackles were 11th in the nation. Woodward joins his teammates as a preseason first-team all-Mountain West by Athlon Sports and a third-team All-American on Phil Steeleās Magazine. He is also on the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.
