OGDEN — One of the great running backs under legendary college football coach Ron McBride died over the holiday weekend.
Former Springville High star running back Trevyn Smith, who went on to become Weber State's all-time leading rusher and a second-team FCS All-American, died July 4. He was 32.
Smith was the state's leading rusher as a senior at Springville in 2004, leading the Red Devils with 2,108 yards. He went on to an equally standout career in college, rushing for 5,029 yards — still the fourth-most in Big Sky Conference history — to go along with a school-record 43 rushing touchdowns and 6,420 all-purpose yards.
He was preceded in death by his mother, according to Weber State linebacker coach Matt Hammer, who posted a tribute to his friend on Twitter. Prior to his current stint at Weber State and previous appointment as head coach at Weber High, Hammer was the Wildcats' offensive coordinator from 2009-12.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to Erica, the kids, Reed and the family," Hammer wrote on Twitter. "Trevyn was one of my favorite people. He will be deeply missed. God bless the glorious reunion with you and your mom, Trev. Words can't express the sadness that I feel tonight. Rest easy, my dude, until we meet again."

Smith is survived by his wife Erica and their four children.
