PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Tony Finau shot two strokes better than his opening-round performance Friday at the U.S. Open.

But it wasn’t enough to keep him in the hunt.

The Salt Lake City-born pro golfer who lives in Lehi carded a 1-over-par 72 to finish with a two-day total of 4-over 146, missing the projected cutline at a major for the first time since the PGA Championship in 2016.

“I’m at the point of my career where I am chasing that second one (career win),” Finau said before leaving for Pebble Beach. “After the second one, it’ll be the third and the fourth. It’s hard to believe, but I’m enjoying the journey of trying to be the best player in the world.”

The West High graduate had two birdies to go with a pair of bogeys on the front nine, then started the back with a birdie on the par-4, 496-yard 10th hole to move to 1-under. But bogeys on Nos. 15 and 18 ended his weekend early.

Finau was tied for 91st as the final groups began to come in off the back nine.

Zac Blair rebounded from an opening-round 83 to shoot 1-over 72 on Friday’s moving day. But the former BYU golfer from Ogden finished near the bottom of the leaderboard with a two-day total of 13-over 155.

Fellow BYU alum Mike Weir shot 5-over 242 to finish outside the top 100 at Pebble Beach.
