PROVO — On the same day BYU basketball coach Mark Pope officially added former Utah Valley assistant coaches Cody Fueger and Chris Burgess to his coaching staff, the Cougars picked up one of the Wolverines' old players, too.

Reigning Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year Wyatt Lowell will also embark on the exodus five miles eastward on University Parkway, he told Stadium's Jeff Goodman.

Lowell will be required to sit out one year, per NCAA transfer rules, and be eligible as a sophomore for the 2020-21 season. The 6-foot-10, 205-pound forward averaged 4.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Wolverines, returning from a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Minnesota last July, and helping UVU to a program-best 25-10 record, including a 12-4 mark in WAC play.

A four-star recruit by Scout.com and three-star prospect by Rivals and ESPN, Lowell is believed to be the highest-rated recruit to sign with Utah Valley out of high school, when he averaged 24.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 blocks per game at Williams Field High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He shot 40 percent from beyond the arc prior to signing a national letter of intent in November 2015, before his senior season and prior to serving a mission.

Lowell will be the second Utah Valley player to follow Pope to BYU, after Jake Toolson said Tuesday night that he was transferring back to Provo after he earns his bachelor's degree. The 6-foot-5 wing will have one final season of eligibility after winning WAC player of the year honors in 2018-19, bookending his career at BYU after spending the first two seasons coming off the bench in Provo.

Lowell is the fourth player to depart from Utah Valley since Pope left for BYU and former Lakers assistant Mark Madsen ascended to the job in Orem. In addition to Toolson, UVU center Baylee Steele has committed to Duquesne as a graduate transfer, while former Salt Lake Community College forward Isaiah White will return to Utah Valley after initially inserting his name into the NCAA transfer portal.
