Orem's Puka Nacua named Polynesian Bowl MVP; Skyridge center Logan Sagapolu picks Oregon

SALT LAKE CITY — Logan Sagapolu felt at home during Saturday night’s star-studded Polynesian Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

His father, Tavita, played at the University of Hawaii, and though the family has moved to Lehi and become fans of BYU and the other local schools, UH holds a special place for him.

But it won’t be the place Logan Sagapolu plays college football.

Neither will BYU or Utah.

The 6-foot-3, 340-pound Sagapolu committed to Oregon during the first half of the all-star event, pulling on a green Ducks hat while standing amid family and friends, who all chanted "Go Ducks" in front of a CBS Sports Network camera.

"It was just the love I was getting from all the coaches and the fact I was really comfortable down there," Sagapolu said during the broadcast. "And just showing the love they did to my family means a lot to me."

Players are not bound by oral commitments. Sagapolu can begin signing with the Ducks during the NCAA’s traditional signing period, beginning Feb. 6.

The No. 7-rated center in the Class of 2019 by 247 Sports, Sagapolu helped pace the Falcons to back-to-back Class 5A state title games in the school's first three seasons.

A converted left tackle, he ranks as the No. 4 overall recruit in the state of Utah, a list that also includes LSU signee Apu Pika from East — another Polynesian Bowl honoree.

Ika had a sack on Alabama-bound quarterback Trey Sanders in the first half, but was later disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct by rushing the kicker during the all-star game.

Of course, being an all-star game, Ika was later reinstated during the second half.

Orem wide receiver Puka Nacua also flashed the skills he used to help the Tigers to back-to-back 4A state titles with a toe-tapping touchdown grab for Team Makai, which was led by BYU signee quarterback Jacob Conover from Chandler, Arizona.

Nacua has committed to USC, but did not sign with the Trojans during the early signing period. He recently visited his older brother Samson Nacua at Utah, and he’ll take an official visit to Washington in late January, as well.

The four-star wide receiver also rates BYU, Oregon and UCLA on his big board.

Nacua finished the first half with three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown en route to Offensive MVP honors.

Utah State target Kaulana Makaula had an interception and a pass breakup.

Team Makai beat Team Makua, 27-7 in the exhibition game.

Of course, none of the players on the field were as popular as one individual who roamed the sidelines.

Fan-favorite Vili the Warrior made his return to the Polynesian Bowl, strutting painted chest during the classic at Aloha Stadium.
