SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah may have missed out on Jayden Daniels in the early signing period, but they got their future quarterback Thursday.

Former University of Texas quarterback Cameron Rising announced on Twitter Thursday that he was transferring to Utah. Rising is a former four-star recruit from Newbury Park, California who spent his freshman season at Texas. He enrolled early at Texas in hopes of winning the starting job, but was beat out by sophomore Sam Ehlinger.

Rising, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound pro-style quarterback, entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal in December and visited Utah over the weekend. It was his only official visit since declaring his intention to transfer from Texas.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in December that Utah was likely to look at a transfer to fill the void at quarterback left empty when Arizona State came in and persuaded Daniels to flip a silent commitment from Utah to Arizona State and to replace former Ute Jack Tuttle, who left the program midway through his freshman season. Tuttle eventually landed at Indiana.

Prior to committing to Texas in 2018, Rising was originally committed to Oklahoma but flipped to Texas. The four-star recruit had offers from several top football programs around the country, including Alabama, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, UCLA, Washington State and West Virginia.

In total, Rising had offers from 25 Power-Five programs, according to 247sports.com. Rising was ranked the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, according to 247sports.com.

Utah is expected to start Tyler Huntley at quarterback next season, who will be entering his senior season. Behind Huntley is Jason Shelley, who will enter his redshirt sophomore season; Drew Lisk, who will be entering his junior season; and Rising, who will be eligible in 2020 and will have three years to play three.
