AMERICAN FORK — On American Fork’s first defensive play of homecoming night against rival Lone Peak, cornerback Stockton Bramwell made an interception.

On the Cavemen’s first offensive play from scrimmage, quarterback Boone Abbott ran for a 49-yard touchdown.

And it was all downhill from there.

Abbott completed 15-of-28 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns, and American Fork cruised to a 51-21 win over the Knights to celebrate homecoming Friday night for their first win over the Cavemen's chief rival since 2014.

“When I saw the ball in the air, I just had to go for it,” said Bramwell, who also had two pass breakups in the first half. “The whole team was up and ready to go, so I have to give it to them.

“We were super amped. This is a big game, and it’s always good to come out with a win.”

BYU commit Chase Roberts caught four passes for 122 yards for the Cavemen (5-1, 2-0 Region 4), all in the first half. The 6-foot-4 senior wide receiver sat out the second half with a sling on his arm for precautionary reasons after taking a hit to the elbow making his final catch in the second quarter, head coach Aaron Behm said.

By the time Roberts went to the bench, though, American Fork had a 34-7 halftime advantage.

“Nobody cared if they were getting the ball or making a tackle,” American Fork coach Aaron Behm said. “Guys were just happy to see the team play that kind of football. That’s a great sign of a mature family, and teammates who love each other and care about each other.”

Defensively, the Cavemen were led by Bramwell, who finished with three pass breakups and an interception, and BYU commit Bodie Schoonover, who had two tackles for loss.

“It was everyone,” Cromwell said. “Our D-line was stopping the run, our linebackers stopped the run, and then our DBs were making plays on the outside. That’s all we need to do.”

Even kicker Kyle Thompson booted a pair of field goals, including a 45-yarder that easily cleared the uprights as time expired in the second quarter.

“I love having a kicker who puts the ball on the end zone,” Behm said. “Kyle Thompson has done a great job for us, and that’s where it starts. Then the defense gets a couple of stops and our offense did not get stopped all night. We got points on every drive.”

Roberts, who did not play in the second half, came down hard on his left elbow making a catch in the second quarter and did not return to the game. He spent the second half wearing a sling, and Behm said he was scheduled for an X-ray in the morning.

The Cavemen held Lone Peak (3-3, 0-1 Region 4) out of the end zone until Masen Wake rumbled in for a 3-yard touchdown with 3:08 left in the half. Trajen Hansen caught three passes for 47 yards and two touchdowns in the second half for the Knights, but it was too late for the comeback.

Wake finished with 107 yards rushing, including a 75-yard sprint that set up his TD plunge in the second quarter.

BYU commit Michael Daley had two sacks to lead Lone Peak’s defense.

“When you put up points on every single drive and get stops on defense, it’s tough,” Behm said. “We didn’t have to do more than we are capable of or make stuff up. We just had to do our job, and we did that on offense and defense tonight.”

American Fork plays at Granger next Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m, while the Knights host undefeated Bingham.
