NEW YORK (AP) — Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott says an expanded College Football Playoff would alleviate the pressure it puts on conferences that get left out. He also says there is no urgency to change the four-team format. There are discussions what the playoff might look like in the future. But Scott says he wants to manage expectations about when expansion might actually happen. The Pac-12 has not made the playoff in the past three seasons. He says being left out is “harmful” to the conference.

UNDATED (AP) — Oregon's Mario Cristobal has been named the AP's Pac-12 Coach of the Year by a panel of journalists who cover the league. Cristobal is in his second season as head coach and has righted a group that has seen its share of turbulence with three head coaches in the past four years. Oregon is headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 2015. The biggest surprise of the AP's All-Pac-12 team was the Offensive Player of the Year, with voters evenly split between Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley, Utah running back Zack Moss and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell.

TUSCON, Ariz. (AP) — ate Reese scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the first quarter, Aari McDonald had a double-double, and No. 18 Arizona beat Tennessee State 77-42 to win its school-record 10th consecutive game to open a season. The Wildcats have won a program-record 16 straight overall _ the nation's longest active win streak _ dating to last season when they won the WNIT. The Wildcats _ ranked in the top 20 for the first time since 2003 _ won by at least 25 points for the eighth time this season, including an 83-58 road win over then-No. 22 Texas on Nov. 17.

ATLANTA (AP) — A familiar face was missing as the playoff coaches gathered at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide failed to make the four-team playoff for the first time since it was instituted during the 2014 season. Saban's absence was noted by coaches Dabo Swinney of Clemson and Lincoln Riley of Oklahoma. Both said it was strange to attend a playoff news conference that didn't include Saban. LSU's Ed Orgeron was also back in Atlanta, a few days after winning the SEC title. But Ohio State's Ryan Day was a no-show because of travel delays.
