WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Jamie Newman will begin the season as Wake Forest's starting quarterback. Coach Dave Clawson says Newman won the job ahead of sophomore Sam Hartman. Clawson says he was confident in both quarterbacks because they both looked capable when healthy. Hartman started the first nine games of last season before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Newman took over and led the team to three wins in its last four games.

UNDATED (AP) — College football has become a national enterprise, with big media deals increasing exposure and a postseason system designed to crown a true national champion. At its foundation, however, college football is still very much a regional sport. Recruiting pipelines in the South are pumping out players. That is a simple explanation for why 13 of the last 14 national champions have come from the South.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Mack Brown says true freshman quarterback Sam Howell will start working with the first-team offense in practices. Brown says Howell's consistency had given him an edge in a three-way competition with redshirt freshmen Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder. Fortin and Ruder are set to split reps behind Howell with less than two weeks to go until the Aug. 31 opener against South Carolina.
