MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say the driver of a semitrailer who rolled into the midst of thousands of people marching on a closed Minneapolis freeway over the death of George Floyd has been arrested on suspicion of assault. Authorities say it appeared no one was hurt Sunday, but some witnesses say a handful of people who were on Interstate 35W near downtown Minneapolis sought medical attention on their own. Officials initially said the truck appeared to have been on the freeway before barriers were put up to close it down, but State Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell said at a later briefing that the truck went around a traffic barrier to stay on the road.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville’s police chief says officers and National Guard soldiers enforcing the city’s curfew returned fire, killing a man, when someone in a large group fired at them. Chief Steve Conrad confirmed the shooting happened around 12:15 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of a business on West Broadway. He said officers and the National Guard were called to break up a large group of people who had gathered there after the city’s curfew when someone fired a shot at them. He said officers and soldiers returned fire. It’s unclear if the person killed was the one who fired at law enforcement.

LONDON (AP) — Britain has moved to further ease lockdown restrictions despite warnings from some health officials that the risk of spreading COVID-19 was still too great. Some schools are reopening in England on Monday and some social restrictions have been relaxed, allowing people to have limited contact with family and friends as long as it is done outdoors and with social distancing. Restrictions on some of society’s most vulnerable have also been eased as the government moves to restore some normalcy in daily life and to revive the economy.

ROME (AP) — The first day of June saw coronavirus restrictions ease from Asia to Europe on Monday, even as U.S. protests against police brutality sparked fears of new outbreaks. The Colosseum opened its ancient doors in Rome, ferries restarted in Bangladesh, golfers played in Greece, students returned in Britain and Dutch bars and restaurants were free to welcome hungry, thirsty patrons. Countries around the Mediterranean Sea began tentatively to kick off a summer season in which tourists could bask in their famously sunny beaches while still being protected by social distancing measures. In Italy, visitors were being welcomed back Monday to landmarks like the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum amid strict hygiene measures .

WASHINGTON (AP) — The police killing of George Floyd and the civil and political unrest that’s rocked the nation in the week since has the potential to reshape Joe Biden’s vice presidential selection process. The widespread protests and outcry following the incident have increased pressure on Biden to choose a black woman. Recent news events have elevated dark horse contenders, like Keisha Lance Bottoms, the Atlanta mayor who won praise for her Friday night response to protesters in her city. And they may have disqualified some, like Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, whose controversial record dealing with police violence as a prosecutor has drawn renewed scrutiny.
