WASHINGTON (AP) — Police have fired pepper spray at demonstrators near the White House and the D.C. National Guard has been called in as pockets of violence erupt during a second straight night of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and President Donald Trump’s response to it. Hundreds of people converged on the White House and marched along the National Mall. Protesters dragged away barricades and used concrete for projectiles. A trash bin was set on fire. The D.C. demonstration is one of several around the country protesting Floyd’s death. Trump appeared to cheer on the tougher tactics being used by law enforcement to disperse protesters.

CHICAGO (AP) — Several police cars were damaged, including at least one set on fire, as protests continued Saturday over the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes. The Chicago Sun-Times reports officers struck multiple demonstrators with batons amid the protest near the Trump Tower on the city's Near North Side. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police have arrested nearly 1,400 people in 17 U.S. cities as protests continue over the death of George Floyd. Floyd died Monday in Minnesota after a police officer put his knee on Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. The officer was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder. But the arrest has done little to quell protests across the country. Most have been peaceful. But a few have erupted in violence. An Associated Press tally of arrests found at least 1,383 people have been arrested since Thursday. The actual number is likely higher as protests continue Saturday night.

UNDATED (AP) — False social media reports claim the wife of the Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd is the sister of another officer at the scene of the arrest. Derek Chauvin's wife, Kellie, does have a brother who is a police officer, but he works in neighboring St. Paul. The false reports surfaced after it was reported that Kellie Chauvin had filed for divorce. Her lawyer, Amanda Mason-Sekula, said she “would GREATLY appreciate help” putting the rumor to rest. Derek Chauvin was fired from the department and has been charged with murder in the case.
