LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hundreds of people protesting the death of a black man in police custody in Minneapolis have blocked a Los Angeles freeway, damaging California Highway Patrol cars and possibly injuring a demonstrator. The demonstration by Black Lives Matter-LA and others began peacefully downtown Wednesday afternoon but then some protesters moved onto U.S. 101. An arriving CHP car was surrounded and took off with some demonstrators on the hood after a window was smashed. One man jumped off and lay on the ground before he was taken away by paramedics. The window of a second CHP car also was shattered. No arrests were made. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said officer Derek Chauvin should be charged in the death of George Floyd.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Protesters in Minneapolis are in a standoff with police for the second night after a man's death in police custody. The protests began outside the police precinct in the part of the city where 46-year-old George Floyd died on Memorial Day. Four Minneapolis officers were fired after video footage showed one of them kneeling on the handcuffed Floyd's neck until he became unresponsive. News helicopter footage showed several nearby stores being looted as police encircled the precinct house and made no evident move to intervene.
UNDATED (AP) — A Minneapolis police officer videotaped holding a black man to the ground with his knee during an arrest became the target of social media posts that attempted to tie him to political agendas and racist ideologies. Twitter and Facebook posts with hundreds of thousands of views claimed Officer Derek Chauvin was pictured wearing a “Make Whites Great Again” hat and standing onstage at a Donald Trump rally, neither of which turned out to be true. The spread of false information was so rampant that the president of the Minneapolis police union set the record straight, telling The Associated Press that none of the officers involved in Monday’s incident were at the Trump rally in Minneapolis last October.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say a college student wanted for two slayings in Connecticut has been captured in Maryland. Peter Manfredonia had been the subject of a six-day search involving several police agencies and the FBI. Connecticut State Police say the University of Connecticut senior killed a 62-year-old man and wounded another in northeastern Connecticut on Friday and killed a high school classmate in Derby on Sunday before abducting the man’s girlfriend and driving to New Jersey. Police say Manfredonia was found in the area of a truck stop in Hagerstown, Maryland. A lawyer for the suspect’s family, Michael Dolan, said they were relieved the search had ended peacefully.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has notified Congress that the Trump administration no longer regards Hong Kong as autonomous from mainland China. Wednesday's notification sets the stage for the U.S. to withdraw preferential trade and financial status that the former British colony has enjoyed since it reverted to Chinese rule in 1997. Pompeo's decision wasn't accompanied by a revocation of any specific privileges. But the administration sees it as putting China on notice that Hong Kong’s perks are in jeopardy. It also comes amid calls for the U.S. and others to react against Beijing's move to impose Chinese national security laws over the territory.
