WASHINGTON (AP) — A career Army officer on President Donald Trump’s national security team testified Tuesday he was duty-bound to object to what he called the president’s clearly “improper” phone call seeking Ukrainian investigations of Democrats. Republicans expressed doubts about Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman’s loyalty to the U.S., where he has lived since a toddler. Vindman also recounted a meeting in which a U.S. official told Ukrainians they would need to “deliver” before Trump would meet with their president.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it has carried out a “wide-scale” strike on Iranian targets in Syria following a rocket attack on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The military says fighter jets struck dozens of targets, including weapons warehouses and military bases. Israel said the rocket attack on the Golan Heights was “further clear proof of the purpose of Iranian entrenchment in Syria.”

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong schools have reopened after a six-day shutdown but students were facing transit disruptions as the last protesters remained holed up on a university campus. City officials are trying to restore a sense of normalcy as primary and secondary schools reopened. The transit disruptions are on a smaller scale than in the past. A small group of protesters won’t leave Hong Kong Polytechnic University because they would face arrest.

NEW YORK (AP) — Two jail guards responsible for monitoring Jeffrey Epstein the night he killed himself have been charged with falsifying prison records to conceal they were sleeping and browsing the internet during the hours they were supposed to be keeping a close watch on prisoners. Guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas were accused Tuesday in a grand jury indictment of neglecting their duties. A message left with union officials representing the guards wasn't immediately returned.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Deval Patrick has made his first trip to South Carolina as a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, meeting with about a dozen black female small-business owners. The black former Massachusetts governor said Tuesday night in Columbia that he’s running for president because he believes the values of community in the country are frayed. Launching his bid for president just 2½ months before the Iowa caucuses, Patrick is betting that he can make his case to a broad coalition of voters,
