SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico's governor is seeking to defuse anger that has fed mammoth street protests against him by promising not to seek reelection, but his announcement that he won't step down has brought vows to continue demonstrations. Public furor at Gov. Ricardo Rosselló over disparaging remarks he made about Puerto Ricans intensified after he posted a brief video Sunday saying he won't resign. The unrest comes as the U.S. territory is struggling to recover from Hurricane Maria and a 13-year recession.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee chairman says Wednesday's hearing with Robert Mueller will air "very substantial evidence" of wrongdoing by President Donald Trump and will make a public case for his impeachment. But Republicans are pledging sharp questioning of the special counsel about what they see as a "one-sided" Russia investigation.

HONG KONG (AP) — Clashes involving Hong Kong's protest movement escalated violently as police launched tear gas at protesters who didn't disband after a massive march and subway riders were attacked by masked assailants who appeared to target the pro-democracy demonstrators. Protesters in the Chinese territory have taken to the streets for almost two months to fight a proposed extradition bill and call for electoral reforms and an investigation of police actions.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese automaker Toyota is readying various robots for next year's Tokyo Olympics. One brings back javelins and other objects, while another is a moving display screen that is designed to represent "virtual" spectators. A robot in the likeness of the Olympic and Paralympic mascots has eyes that display stars and hearts. Toyota Motor Corp. is a major Olympic sponsor.

DENVER (AP) — As Republican political power has declined in some Western states, the GOP sees recall elections as a way to regain seats and influence. Colorado GOP operatives have even received training on how to include the recall process as part of their political toolkit. Democrats say it's an attempt by Republicans to win seats in low-turnout special elections that they couldn't win in a traditional election.
