WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump walked out of a meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday and gave notice that he won't work with Democrats until they drop all investigations now that the special counsel's Russia report is out. Democrats say the walkout appeared scripted. The meeting at the White House was set weeks ago, after Trump and Democratic leaders agreed to talk further about addressing problems with the country's infrastructure.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the Pentagon will present plans to the White House to send up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East to beef up defenses against potential Iranian threats. The officials say no decision has been made and it's not clear if the White House will approve sending all or just some of the requested forces. Officials say the troops will be defensive forces, and the discussions include additional Patriot missile batteries and more ships.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Authorities are concerned about the threat possibly posed by a California man who became known as the American Taliban after he goes free. John Walker Lindh is scheduled to be released Thursday from a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, after serving over 17 years. He admitted providing support to the Taliban but denied a role in the death of a CIA officer. Lindh joined the Taliban before the Sept. 11 attacks and was captured in late 2001 in a battle in Afghanistan.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Tornadoes have touched down near Joplin, Missouri, on the eighth anniversary of a massive tornado that killed 161 people there. Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer said one tornado started Wednesday night southwest of the small town of Carl Junction and moved northeast through the towns of Oronogo and Golden City. Stammer said authorities were conducting a house-to-house search in Carl Junction to determine whether anyone was injured.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York lawmakers have given final passage to legislation that would allow President Donald Trump's state tax returns to be released to congressional committees that have, so far, been barred from getting the president's federal filings. The Democrat-led Senate and Assembly approved the measures Wednesday, sending them to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat. A spokesman has said Cuomo supports the principle behind the legislation but will review the bill carefully before deciding whether to sign it.
