SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The daughter of a Utah man who police say was fatally shot by a security guard says he was likely in the area to apply for jobs at a nearby state building.
Michelle Higgins tells the Salt Lake Tribune her father was likely trying to get help at a state unemployment office when he was shot in the back Wednesday.
Salt Lake City Police say the guard claimed Stanfield grabbed his gun holster and pointed the weapon at him, but surveillance video showed 54-year-old Thomas Stanfield was trying to leave.
Higgins says her son his heartbroken about losing his grandfather.
Arrested in his death is 26-year-old Timothy Lutes. Police say he shot the man after a fight that started when Lutes asked him to leave the area.
No attorney or publicly listed phone number was immediately available for Lutes.
