YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer in suburban New York was shot in the jaw during a car stop that turned into a gunbattle, police said.
It happened around 8 p.m. Monday in Yonkers.
"We received a call from a resident reporting a suspicious vehicle occupied by two males that were acting suspicious," said Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner at a late night news conference.
As officers approached the vehicle, at least one of the suspects produced a handgun and fired several shots at the officers, striking one of them, police said. The officers then returned fire.
"Several shots were fired. One of the suspects was hit," Gardner said.
Carmen Feliciano told the Daily News that she was helping her sons with homework when the gunfire broke out. She said she called police, who told her to stay inside.
"The first shots were like a pistol, and then there were other guns going off, like they were exchanging fire. There were at least 30 shots," said Feliciano, adding that it lasted for about 10 minutes.
The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. Police have not released her name.
One of the suspects was taken into custody at the scene, while the wounded suspect was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
"It could have been much worse," Gardner said. "Thank God the officer right now did not sustain a life-threatening injury. She was struck. She's in serious, but stable condition, but thank God it looks like she's gonna be OK."
