SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested Monday for allegedly chasing down and running over a dog with his truck after the dog got ahold of one of his chickens, according to police.
Lonnie Carl Campbell, 63, of Helper, was arrested for investigation of aggravated cruelty to animals.
About 6:15 a.m. a man was walking “Kain,” his Alaskan Malamute, along the railroad tracks near 400 East and 400 South in Price, when “the dog pulled away from the victim and entered the backyard of a residence. ... The victim wasn’t able to maintain his hold on the dog’s leash due to the dog’s instinct to run after the chicken located in the backyard,” according to a police affidavit.
Campbell told police he saw the dog chasing his chickens in the backyard and then “take a chicken and leave the property,” the affidavit states.
“Lonnie said he became angry, so he got into his truck and started chasing the dog. Lonnie said he intended to catch up to the dog and hit it in the head. Lonnie said he wanted to hurt the dog. Lonnie said he was able to catch up to the dog and run his vehicle over the top of it,” according to the affidavit. “Lonnie said he knew he probably killed the dog. Lonnie also explained that he lost his temper and shouldn’t have. Lonnie considers his chicken as a pet.”
The dog was found deceased less than a mile away from Campbell’s residence. Police said Campbell had to go off-road through gravel and brush along the railroad tracks in order to chase down the dog, according to the affidavit.
“Lonnie’s chicken was found just outside his property and was alive. The chicken appeared to be fine,” the affidavit states.
Campbell was arrested and booked into the Carbon County Jail for intentionally running over the dog.
