SALT LAKE CITY — The former police chief of Mantua, who was convicted of impaired driving last year, has been arrested twice this month in Cache County, according to jail records.
Shane Jacob Zilles, 50, of Wellsville, has now been arrested three times since pleading guilty to impaired driving in 2019 when Utah Highway Patrol troopers stopped Zilles, who was still police chief, driving recklessly while in his police patrol car.
According to the Cache County Jail website, Zilles was arrested Friday for investigation of five counts of possessing prescription drugs that were forged or altered. On Feb. 6, he was arrested by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office for investigation of DUI and driving on a revoked license, according to jail records.
Details about each arrest were not immediately available.
Zilles is already scheduled to go to trial on March 20 on a charge of DUI, according to court records. He was arrested in August by Logan police.
All of these arrests come on the heels of Zilles’ arrest by the Utah Highway Patrol on Jan. 29, 2019, while he was driving his patrol car near the mouth of Sardine Canyon.
Utah Highway Patrol pulled Zilles over after he was seen driving in his patrol car at least 86 mph in a 65 mph zone. The vehicle was traveling in the median, and without any emergency lights or sirens, according to a UHP report. Zilles pleaded guilty in that case to impaired driving in Wellsville Justice Court.
Zilles was fired as chief of the small Utah town in Box Elder County shortly after his arrest.
According to a statement from Mantua Mayor Michael Johnson shortly after Zilles was fired in 2019, “It appears that prescription meds have claimed another good person’s reputation.”
Zilles was sentenced to two days in jail and placed on probation for one year.
