SALT LAKE CITY — A retest of a vaping device confiscated at Grand County High School earlier this month confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC but ruled out methamphetamine, according to a school press release.
Initial tests of the devices indicated the presence of methamphetamine but the subsequent test was negative. A school resource officer conducted both tests, said Principal Stephen Hren.
Regardless of the substance, vaping or possession of a vaping device is a policy violation subject to a 10-day mandatory suspension. “The consequence for students is the same regardless of whether the test is positive for nicotine or drugs,” the press release states.
Since the first devices were discovered at school, educators have communicated with parents and students about the medical consequences and risks of vaping. “Some students have voluntarily turned in their vaping devices, and parents with concerns about their student vaping have sought resources from the schools,” the press release states.
According to the press release, the school district will continue to test all vaping devices and provide appropriate resources to address student vaping.
Hren would not specify how many students were suspended but said the incident was confined to Grand County High School, a 9-12 high school.
A press release issued by the school district on Oct. 3 said the school had “more than one incident of vaping devices testing positive for methamphetamine. At this time, it is unclear as to how the methamphetamine was acquired or who was responsible for the vaping devices containing the drugs.”
