VERNAL — A motorcyclist is in "extremely critical condition" after crashing into a bike rack on the back of a vehicle near Vernal Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The motorcyclist was traveling south on state Route 191 about 14 miles north of Vernal when he crashed into the bike rack, lost control and crashed, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol. He had a helmet strapped to the motorcycle but was not wearing it at the time of the crash and suffered serious head injuries.

The vehicle with the bike rack did not remain at the scene of the crash, and troopers are attempting to identify both the vehicle and the driver, the news release reads. Witnesses of the crash stopped to help the motorcyclist who was eventually flown in a medical helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake.

Troopers believe alcohol may have been a factor in the motorcyclist's crash.

"(Utah Highway Patrol) would remind all motorcycle riders to always wear a helmet, ride the speed limit, and never ride while impaired," the news release says.

The name of the motorcyclist has not yet been released.
