KEARNS – It’s been just over a month since 19-year-old Neko Jardine died following a tragic shooting. On Friday, his classmates and former football team gathered to remember him.

It’s the start of a new year for students at Kearns High School.

Football season kicks off with tonight’s game against Box Elder County High School. However, the student body and players are in mourning as one of their own is missing.

“What can I say, we loved him and they loved him,” expressed Sherri Jardine, Neko's grandmother.

Tonight, the Kearns community gathers around the family of 19-year-old Neko Jardine to celebrate his life.

“He loved Kearns High. He loved being a cougar. He loved his experience here and he loved his brothers,” stated Sherri Jardine.

“Each game, a different team member will wear the jersey, and at the end of the season, all of the teammates will sign the jersey and present it to Neko’s dad,” explained Kerry Dalling, Neko’s aunt.

Neko’s life ended too quickly on July 14th, following a shooting at a house party in West Valley City, in the area of 5625 West 4360 South.

“He was gunned down with 6 bullets,” said Kerry Dalling.

Police are still looking for answers.

“I’m completely shattered. I will never be the same,” shared Sherri Jardine.

It’s why tonight is all about remembering the kindhearted young man, according to friends and family, who even in death is able to bring a community together.

“Even up in heaven he is going to be watching over everybody he can, which is exactly what he did while he was on earth,” said Luke Dalling, Neko’s cousin.

The family is planning on holding a peaceful march in honor of Neko Jardine next Saturday, August 24th at 3:30 p.m. at Hunter High School.

Police have released partial pictures of what they believe to be the suspect vehicle. It is believed to be a red sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima or Maxima.

Those with information about the case should contact West Valley City Police at 801-840-4000.
