BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A 16-year-old girl is dead and five others injured after a crash in Big Cottonwood Canyon partially closed the road early Saturday morning, officials said.
A passenger car carrying four people drove into a parking area near the Butler Fork Trailhead, 9300 East Big Cottonwood Canyon, just before 3 a.m., Unified Police detective Kevin Mallory said. The passenger car hit the back of a pickup truck where the girl and her 44-year-old mother were sleeping in the bed.
The passenger car then drove off the road down an embankment and rolled.
The 16-year-old girl died on scene, and all others involved in the crash were injured and transported to the hospital. At least two were in critical condition Saturday afternoon.
There was evidence the driver of the passenger car may have been impaired, Mallory said. The cause of the crash is part of an ongoing investigation.
Police closed the road at the mouth of the canyon early Saturday morning but reopened it up to mile marker 10 a few hours later. The road is now completely reopened.
None of the people involved in the crash had been identified Saturday afternoon.
