TAYLORSVILLE — A 31-year-old man was arrested after a lengthy negotiation with SWAT officers Saturday, police said.

Unified police detective Kevin Mallory said officers were called to a hospital emergency room on reports of domestic violence Saturday afternoon. They spoke to a woman who explained the violent situation and said the man allegedly involved in the incident could have firearms in his apartment.

Mallory said when police arrived at Callaway Apartments in Taylorsville to speak with the man, later identified as Jonathan D. Smith, he refused to leave his apartment and would only speak to police and their negotiation team through a window.

According to Mallory, residents of other units in that same building were told to evacuate and others were instructed to shelter in place as a precaution due to the potential firearms.

Once SWAT officers secured a search warrant, they entered the home and arrested Smith. He was later booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of kidnapping and aggravated assault.
