HUNTSVILLE — Two men are dead after a truck carrying seven people careened off a steep embankment early Saturday morning in Weber County, officials said.
The truck was traveling on a mountainous dirt road near Huntsville, 7000 Middle Fork Drive, when it drove off the roadway, rolled several times and ejected all the passengers about 3 a.m., according to a Facebook post from the Weber Fire District. One of the passengers walked 2 miles to a nearby cabin for help.
When crews arrived on the scene, they found the truck about 160 feet off the roadway in a ravine. Two of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, two others were flown to a local hospital in a medical helicopter and two others were transported via ambulance, according to Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Cortney Ryan.
The surviving passengers' conditions are still unknown, but one female has been released from the hospital. The victims range in age from 16 years old to 50 years old, but authorities are not releasing names, pending notification of family. Four of the passengers were male, two were female, and authorities are unsure of the gender of the seventh passenger.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, as well as the darkness of the hour.
"Our hearts go out to everyone involved, the passengers, their families and friends and to our first responders. These incidents are never easy on anyone," the Facebook post reads.
