KANAB — The man who police say was driving a boat on Lake Powell while intoxicated, resulting in a crash that killed 18-year-old Jayla Hiatt of Spanish Fork, has been charged.

Triston Brady Harrison, 21, was charged Tuesday in 6th District Court with automobile homicide negligence-DUI, a second-degree felony.

Harrison was intoxicated while driving the boat Friday when it hit a rock and beached, causing passengers to fly out of the boat and hit the shore, according to an affidavit filed in Kanab's 6th District Court.

There were a total of eight people on the boat when it crashed and a few others were treated at the Bullfrog clinic, Glen Canyon officials said Monday.

When authorities talked to Harrison, an officer "could smell the strong odor of alcoholic beverages" coming from him and "observed his eyes to be glossy and bloodshot," according to the affidavit.

Harrison was also charged Tuesday with driving under the influence with a passenger under 18 years old, a class A misdemeanor; driving under the influence with personal injury, a class A misdemeanor; reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor; vessel navigation and steering violation, a class C misdemeanor.

Harrison faces another DUI charge filed last month. According to court documents, he was charged in 3rd District Court on May 29 with driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor.
