WEST VALLEY CITY — I-215 West reopened Saturday morning following a car crash that left one individual dead and one injured Friday night.
The crash occurred on northbound I-215 West near 3000 South in West Valley City Friday night, according to Utah Highway Patrol’s Lt. Wade Breur. Troopers responded to a call about a car that was on fire around 10:47 p.m.
The vehicle, then in flames, had been struck because it was stopped in the middle lane, Breur said. Investigators believe the vehicle, a silver Suzuki Forenza, may have had an equipment malfunction resulting in the unexpected stop.
A silver Honda Accord was changing lanes when it connected with the Suzuki and traveled off to the right side of the road, according to Breur. The Suzuki spun into another lane and burst into flames, causing fatal injuries to the driver, who was the car’s only occupant.
The deceased driver of the Suzuki was identified as Luis E. Franco, 23, a resident of West Valley City, Breur said. The driver of the Honda’s injuries were minor and he was not hospitalized.
I-215 West northbound was closed at 3500 South shortly after the incident Friday night and reopened Saturday morning, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
