SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Symphony music director Thierry Fischer will end his tenure after its 2021-2022 season, according to a news release.

Fischer has been music director since 2009 and is the seventh music director in the history of the Utah Symphony, according to the release.

“I am deeply grateful for the rich musical partnership I have enjoyed with the members of this outstanding orchestra, and for the experiences we’ve shared as musical ambassadors to the people of Utah,” Fischer said in the release. “My journey with the Utah Symphony has been remarkably fulfilling, and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together.”

After he steps down in September 2022, Fischer will become a music director emeritus of the Utah Symphony and will return for regular guest appearances with the ensemble, the release states.

He has led the symphony through two outdoor concert tours through Utah, one in 2014 and one in 2017, according to the release. He also conducted the group for a 75th-anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2016.

Fischer also is a guest conductor with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea, and the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan.

Utah Symphony President and CEO Paul Meecham said Fischer helped the group experience “incredible artistic growth.”

“Under his leadership, the orchestra has risen to be truly exceptional and has become well known among prominent guest artists and conductors for its excellence and professionalism,” Meecham said in the release. “Thierry has built a legacy here that will continue to benefit us for years to come.”
