LAYTON — A Layton man accused of becoming upset with an 18-month-old child and causing burns to the boy now faces a charge of child abuse.

Gaven Sydney Watson, 19, was charged Thursday in 2nd District Court with child abuse, a third-degree felony.

Watson told authorities that he woke up on Feb. 9 to find "the child had smeared feces in the child's bedroom." Watson admitted he was "upset" and was "yelling" at the boy when he took the child into the bathroom and turned the water on for the bathtub, according to charging documents.

"He said that the child was screaming, but he did not immediately notice that the water was burning the child because he was talking to the child's mother," the charges state.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where doctors treated him for second-degree burns on his legs, feet, buttocks and genitals, according to the charges.
