SANDY — Authorities say a juvenile was responsible for threats made against a Sandy elementary school that led to an increased police presence at the school Monday.

The juvenile, whose name, age and gender, were not immediately released, is a student who attends another school in the Canyons School District, Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen said on Wednesday. Police don't believe the threat was credible or that any another person was involved.

On Monday, Nielsen told KSL TV that investigators were assigned to the case as a precaution after threats were made over the weekend. Police didn't divulge what the threat was, but said it was made toward East Sandy Elementary, the students and staff members.

The Canyons School District issued a shelter-in-place for the school on Monday after the threats were made. It was eventually lifted Monday afternoon.

Even though the threats were determined to not be credible, Nielsen said the threats “consumed an excessive amount of resources and caused fear among students, staff and parents; creating alarm for school officials.”

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office is screening whether charges will be filed in the case, Nielsen said. Charges for threats can range in severity from a class B misdemeanor to a felony, he added.
