WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was shot Monday evening while trying to intervene in an argument, police said.
The shooting was reported about 8:15 p.m. in the area of 3850 Benview Drive in West Valley City. It started when a man crossed the street to where people were fighting, according to West Valley Police Lt. Justin Wyckoff.
"He came over across the street to help out and figure out what was going on, and at that point, the shooter didn't like what he was saying and the gun was pulled," Wyckoff said.
A man involved in the argument pulled out a gun and shot the other man four times, Wyckoff said. One of the shots grazed his head, one went in his back and one hit his stomach, according to the lieutenant.
No other injuries were reported.
The man with gunshot wounds was able to run across the street for help. He was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in serious condition, Wyckoff said.
The shooter ran away after the incident, according to Wyckoff.
Police were searching for him as of late Monday night. He was described as Hispanic and in his 30s, with a shaved head and many tattoos on each of his arms, Wyckoff said.
Police did not immediately know what the original argument was about or if the shooter and victim knew each other, Wyckoff said. Both men were believed to live in the area.
According to the initial investigation, Wyckoff said "young kids" were fighting and people were trying to get involved in the fight.
Police late Monday evening did not believe there was a threat to the public in connection to the shooting.
