SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a Kearns woman arrested over the weekend was intoxicated when she hit a pedestrian and then drove off.

Chauntel Marie Garza, 22, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail about 2 a.m. Saturday for investigation of DUI involving serious injury, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and having an open container in the car.

Police were initially called to an auto-pedestrian crash at 300 West and 300 South.

"Witnesses who observed the accident stated a white passenger vehicle with three occupants hit a male pedestrian at approximately 40 mph," according to a jail report.

The male pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, the report states.

Officers reported spotting a car with "heavy front end damage and a broken windshield" near 400 South and 900 West and pulled it over.

"The officer who stopped the vehicle could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage from the driver," the officer wrote in the report. (She) failed the field sobriety tests and I determined she was too impaired to be operating a motor vehicle safely."

An open bottle of liquor that had spilled onto the floorboard was found in the back seat, according to the report.
