PARK CITY — A man who told police he was paid to sneak people across the border into the United States has been charged in Utah with human smuggling.

Rolando Gomez-Gomez, 33, was charged in Summit County's 3rd District Court on Tuesday with the third-degree felony. In addition, he was charged with giving false information to a police officer, a class C misdemeanor, and speeding, an infraction.

On Saturday, Gomez-Gomez was pulled over on I-80 for speeding, according to charging documents.

A Summit County Jail report states an officer with Homeland Security stopped Gomez-Gomez's vehicle for going eight miles over the speed limit.

The officer who made the stop noticed eight additional men inside the vehicle "attempting to hide," the charges state.

Gomez-Gomez initially gave investigators an identification card with a false name, according to charging documents. But police later learned his real name and that he "had been arrested on numerous occasions for alien smuggling," the charges state.

When asked if he knew the other people in the car with him, Gomez-Gomez said he did not, according to charging documents.

"The individuals in the vehicle were questioned and they disclosed that they had paid (Gomez-Gomez) to drive them to other states," the charges state.
