Idaho Land Board will stick with timberland-buying strategy
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Gov. Brad Little’s desire to make a significant course change involving a politically charged strategy on how to invest millions of dollars to benefit public schools and other beneficiaries has been rejected by his fellow members on the Idaho Land Board. Little’s motion to permanently move $50 million from a fund intended to buy timberland into market investments on Tuesday failed to get a second and died. The state buying timberland has drawn fierce opposition from timber companies that complain they can’t compete against the state. County commissioners have also complained that counties lose property tax revenue when the state buys land.

Turnout looks to be big in Idaho's first mail-only primary
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — County election workers across Idaho were bustling for the state primary Tuesday morning, but the tasks were far from the usual routine. Instead, staffers were checking on last-minute requests for ballots and keeping track of returned ballots as Idaho shifts to its first-ever entirely mail-in primary amid the coronavirus pandemic. More than 334,000 ballots have been sent out or requested statewide according to numbers from the Idaho Secretary of State’s office, and more than 131,000 of those have been returned. That’s dramatically higher than the 2016 primary, when nearly 25,000 Idaho citizens voted in advance.

Deputy dies after he was struck by another deputy's vehicle
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Authorities in eastern Idaho say a sheriff’s deputy was hit and killed by another deputy when both were responding to a crash early Monday morning. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement that the accident happened when the deputies were responding to the scene of a rollover vehicle crash before sunrise on Monday. The first deputies at the scene were trying to talk to a woman who was involved in the initial crash when another deputy arrived in his vehicle, striking one of the deputies in the group. The deputy who was struck died of his injuries a short time later. The Idaho State Police is investigating.

Self-employed Idaho residents can tap virus rescue money
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Gov. Brad Little says self-employed Idaho residents can tap into the $300 million in grant money the state has set aside to help small businesses financially harmed by the coronavirus pandemic. The Republican governor announced Monday the expansion of who can get the grant money that's from the $1.25 billion it received in federal funding. Those seeking the $7,500 grants must earn at least 50% of their income from self-employed work. About 2,600 businesses with up to 19 employees applied for grants of $10,000 last week, and businesses with up to 50 employees are applying this week.

Virus interrupts St. Helens eruption anniversary plans
COUGAR, Wash. (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak disrupted what had been big plans to mark the 40th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. The peak in the Cascade Mountain Range blew its top on May 18, 1980, killing 57 people, blasting more than 1,300 feet off the top of the mountain and raining volcanic ash around for hundreds of miles. But there will be no public observances at the volcano on Monday. Oregon Public Broadcasting reports the main highway into the national volcanic monument is closed due to COVID-19 and the multiple visitor centers and museums that had planned remembrances are also shuttered.

Idaho mom charged with murder after infant's death
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho woman has been charged with murder in connection with the death of her infant son. Paramedics were called to a home in Meridian last week for a 2 month-old boy who was unresponsive and later died of his injuries. Twenty-six-year-old Danielle Radue of Meridian was charged with first-degree murder on Friday. She has not yet had a chance to enter a plea and her attorney could not be immediately reached for comment. Police did not release the child’s name nor any details about his injuries.
