SALT LAKE CITY — Police located a teenager who was the subject of an Amber Alert and took into custody a man who was with her, authorities said.
Sandra Rios-Chavez, 17, was located Monday night and is waiting to be reunited with her family, according to a Facebook post from the Surprise, Arizona, police. Miguel Rodriguez-Perez, 18, was taken into police custody.
Authorities in Jerome, Idaho, issued an Amber Alert for the pair Monday because they believed Rios-Chavez may have been forcibly abducted by Rodriguez-Perez on Sunday. Police spotted the vehicle the pair were believed to be driving later Monday and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled with police in pursuit.
Officers eventually found the vehicle abandoned in a "rural area," according to Surprise police Sgt. Tim Klarkowski. They did not find Rios-Chavez or Rodriguez-Perez inside but set up a perimeter around the area and began a search.
Police were able to locate both Rios-Chavez and Rodriguez-Perez within three hours but are not currently releasing details about where the pair was found — though Klarkwoski said it was near Grand Avenue and Norwich Drive in Surprise.
Rios-Chavez appeared to be unharmed, but the case is still under investigation.
The 17-year-old was last seen before the alleged abduction about 6 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant in Jerome, Idaho, according to a news release from Idaho State police. She was believed to be in danger, authorities said.
Rios-Chavez formerly had a relationship with Rodriguez-Perez, but there is currently a no-contact order in place between the two, according to Jerome Police Chief Dan Hall.
