MOAB — A man died after he was struck by a vehicle while trying to pick up fallen items on U.S. Highway 191 Saturday night, authorities said.
Carl Q. Bierschied, 37, of Moab, was a passenger in a blue Toyota sedan north on the highway near Resource Boulevard and stopped in the center turn lane to pick up items that had fallen off of the sedan and into the southbound lane shortly after 9:15 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol officials said.
A blue Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on the highway at the same time. The driver told authorities they swerved to avoid Bierschied, but the pickup struck him, troopers said.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and attempted CPR, but Bierschield was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
