WASHINGTON, Washington County — A southern Utah teacher is on leave as administrators investigate whether she dragged a fourth grade girl by the hair during a field trip.

Chaperones and students reported that the incident happened Wednesday during a trip to Zion National Park, said Washington County School District spokesman Steven Dunham.

He said district officers are interviewing those who saw the encounter. The girl's feet did not leave the ground, according to Dunham.

Administrators don't believe the child was injured, Dunham said, but the witness accounts indicate the teacher's behavior was inappropriate.

The district has not released the name of the Coral Canyon Elementary School teacher, who is now on administrative leave.

Dunham did not know Friday if the instructor was trying to keep the child from danger or how far the student was carried.
