SYRACUSE — Antelope Island State Park has upped its entrance fee from $10 to $15 as of Thursday, park officials confirmed, and up to $10 for seniors over 62.

The fee increases come as the park prepares for upgrades, including a widening of the park entrance road that aims to alleviate traffic that sometimes backs up at the gate.

Park Manager Jeremy Shaw said entrance fees go back into the park and will help pay for the new entrance, a project he expects to be complete by the end of the year. Currently, drivers must line up single-file to pay entrance fees, but the project will add a second lane.

"We'll have an auto-pay kiosk, or system, there," Shaw said, "so people can pay with a credit card, scan their annual pass, stuff like that, just in an effort to try to alleviate some of the traffic at the gate and expedite some of the folks trying to come in."

Shaw said the park's entrance fees haven’t gone up "in a long time."

"So it was kind of just time for that," he said.

In addition to the entrance improvements, Shaw said the park has received approval to add a new campground and hopes to add new trails in the future, too.

"And all of that money is the result of fees collected at state parks over the years," Shaw said. "It'll help with a lot of the development stuff we're looking forward to in the future."
