PARK CITY — Blooming wildflowers, lush aspen groves, and sweeping views of Jordanelle Reservoir, Heber Valley and the Wasatch mountain range await hikers daydreaming of a post-workday escape.
Hikers will easily note the Silver Lake trailhead as they head west from the Silver Lake Village at Deer Valley Resort. The trailhead is clearly marked with a short, white signpost. A single-track, hiking-only trail ascends past thick pine trees and wide ski runs 1.7 miles up the mountainside to the summit of Bald Mountain.
In all, hikers will climb just over 1,000 feet in elevation through the trees and across ski runs.
Sounds of chirping birds in the trees high above and of mountain bikers whizzing by on nearby trails float through the trees and sunlight dapples the dirt trail; the scent of pine wafts in the breeze.
A versatile but intermediate hike, the Silver Lake trail offers many ways to experience the mountain:
- Riding the Sterling Express chairlift to the summit for an easy stroll down the mountain.
- A more strenuous option of hiking to Bald Mountain's 9,400-foot summit with a ride down the Sterling Express
- An out-and-back hike on the trail totaling 3.4 miles round trip
- Connecting with the Ontario trail for a 360-degree tour of Bald Mountain and 4.8 miles round trip
Essentials
Keeping hydrated is an important part of enjoying nature and conquering the trails, as every hiker knows. Most outdoor websites suggest 0.5 liters of water per hour of hiking per person.
While the Silver Lake and Ontario trails are mostly shaded, there are portions of the trail where you are in full sun. A strenuous uphill climb will deplete you of fluids and you will need to replenish as you make your way to and from Bald Mountain's summit.
Be sure to bring along enough water for the hike and a few snacks to enjoy while taking a rest at the top.
Additionally, when spending time outdoors it's advantageous to apply and reapply sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher applied approximately every two hours.
Both the Silver Lake and Ontario hikes are doable in both Chacos or similarly branded sandals as well as hiking boots, as the trails are clear of shrubbery and streams.
Leave thoughts of the office behind and bring your good vibes! This hike combination makes for a perfect escape after a long day indoors.
