LEVAN, Juab County — Central Utah health officials issued a recreation warning for Yuba Lake Thursday after potentially harmful levels of toxic algae were discovered at the reservoir.

Test samples showed microcystin levels of 128 micrograms per liter, which is above the threshold for a health-based recreation advisory, according to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

People are advised not to swim or water ski at the lake, as well as avoid areas of algae scum while boating on Yuba Lake, the DEQ said. People also should keep pets and livestock away from the water and should avoid ingesting any water from the lake, the agency said.

Anglers are advised to clean fish thoroughly and discard fish guts, the DEQ said.

Anyone who has recently visited Yuba Lake and has experienced digestive distress, skin irritations or headaches should contact their local doctor or the Utah Poison Control Center at utahpoisoncontrol.org.

Farther north, the Lincoln Beach area of Utah Lake remains closed due to health risks, according to the DEQ’s website.

Several health advisories are still in place for Utah bodies of water, including:

  • Manning Meadow Reservoir and Upper Box Creek Reservoir in Piute County
  • Jordan Narrows, Blackridge Reservoir and Wheeler Farm areas of the Jordan River in Salt Lake County
  • Calder Reservoir and Matt Warner Reservoir in Uintah County
  • McClellan and Box lakes in the Payson Lakes area of Utah County
  • Provo and Goshen bays on Utah Lake in Utah County.
