SALT LAKE CITY — Outdoorsy dads can be hard to shop for — and the stuff they really want tends to be very expensive. REI Salt Lake City’s Kieran Balazs is an outdoorsy dad as well as an industry expert, and he offered his advice to KSL.com on picking gifts for less than $100 this year.

Hydroflask Water Bottle =======================

“One thing I like to give out, and I got my dad one of these last year for Father's Day, is a Hydroflask,” Balazs said.

The 32-ounce HydroFlask Water Bottle is ideal for all-day hydration, keeps beverages cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12, is compatible with most water filters and comes with a lifetime warranty, according to the company’s website.

“They are double-wall insulated, can hold hot drinks as well as ice cold, and I have it from my parents that they can fill up a Hydroflask with ice and lemon water and they can leave it in a hot car while they go on a bike ride and at the end of the day they’ll still have ice in their Hydroflask,” Balazs said.

Black Diamond Spot 325 headlamp

Balazs is a big fan of headlamps as well, and he got the Black Diamond Spot 325 for his own father-in-law. The waterproof headlamp is light, small and produces a powerful 325 lumens of light, according to Black Diamond’s website.

“They last a long time and they are easy to use,” Balazs said. “Everybody needs one.”

Leatherman Wave + Multi-tool

$99.95

“The Leatherman Wave Plus Multitool, which just barely squeaks under that $100 price limit, is a great multi-tool by Leatherman,” Balazs said.

This international bestseller has all the essential tools in previous models, but it also comes with durable wire cutters, according to Leatherman’s website. There are 18 tools, which can be opened and closed conveniently, and many are accessible on the outside with the multi-tool folded.

“They are burly,” Balazs said. “I’ve used mine for everything from cutting rope for a bear hang in the backcountry to helping fix my car. A wonderful multitool.”

JetBoil Flash Cooking System

$99.95

“This one is also just under the price range at $99.95, but it is an integrated cooking system by JetBoil,” Balazs said. “It’s a backpacking stove with a cup that screws onto the top.”

The Flash is famous for its ability to boil water in under 100 seconds, according to REI. It also has a color-changing boil indicator, is easy to use with a push-button igniter and has a variety of accessories for different uses.

“It comes with a pot stabilizer that is pretty cool,” Balazs said. “It’s very easy to use and you can get an accessory for it if you’re a coffee drinker where there’s a french press you can use as well. This is something I use every time I go camping or backpacking.”
