PROVO — A Provo woman recently opened up about an incident in which she helped save an 85-year-old man’s life while she was delivering food to him.

Gwen Thibaudeau, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, told KSL Newsradio on Wednesday that when she was delivering a meal to Joseph Scott in early September, she didn't see him out in front of a bottom-level condominium where she typically would greet him.

When she didn’t see him that day, she believed something was wrong.

“I went down the stairs, knocked on his door. He didn’t answer,” Thibaudeau recalled. “The door was unlocked, so I opened it up and I saw him slumped over (a) chair.”

She first believed Scott was asleep. She called his name a couple of times, and he didn’t respond. She then went over to him and shook him and he didn’t respond to that, so she called 911.

Provo Fire and Rescue crews responded and took him to a hospital. It turned out Scott had taken the wrong medication and could have died had paramedics not been able to get to him in time.

Thibaudeau said she was grateful that she came to the home when she did and that she checked in on him.

“Everything just kind of clicked, and it all worked out,” she said.
