A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY — “Star Wars” fans might have thought their only hope of seeing Diego Luna’s crafty rebel character Cassian Andor was in 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
It turns out that feeling was a disturbing lack of faith, because Cassian Andor will be back, returning in a live-action “Rogue One” prequel series that will start production in 2019, according to Disney.
A title and release date haven’t been announced for the series, which will debut on Disney’s forthcoming streaming service, Disney+, company officials said Thursday.
The series will follow Cassian and his adventures during “the formative years of the Rebellion,” Disney said.
“Going back to the ‘Star Wars’ universe is very special for me,” Luna said. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
This is the second live-action “Star Wars” television show Disney and Lucasfilm have announced.
Earlier this year, Disney announced the production of “The Mandalorian,” a series set after the events of “Return of the Jedi” and before “The Force Awakens.”
That series will follow “the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic,” according to Disney.
Bounty hunter Boba Fett, a fan-favorite “Star Wars” character, wore Mandalorian armor, and the series is expected to tell the story of a warrior similar to Boba Fett, according to Disney.
“The Mandalorian” will be written and produced by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau and will be available on Disney+ sometime after the streaming service launches, Disney said.
