KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — A passenger plane has crashed in a crowded neighborhood on the edge of the international airport near Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi. Karachi's mayor said all 107 passengers and crew died, but Pakistani civil aviation officials say at least two people survived the crash. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media. Local TV stations ran footage of a man on a stretcher who they said had survived the crash. Pakistan had just recently resumed domestic flights ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr following weeks of lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Much of the country remains unlikely to venture out to bars, restaurants, theaters or gyms anytime soon, despite state and local officials increasingly allowing businesses to reopen. That's according to a new survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Just 42% of those who went to concerts, movies, theaters or sporting events at least monthly before the coronavirus outbreak say they’d do so in the next few weeks if they could. Only about half of those who regularly went to restaurants, exercised at a gym or traveled would go back if they could. That hesitancy could muffle any recovery from the sharpest and swiftest economic downturn in U.S. history.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Capitol Hill Republicans want to phase out unemployment benefits to encourage Americans to go back to work —- although it's not clear when there will be jobs to return to. With the nation’s death toll from COVID-19 poised to hit 100,000 and layoffs surpassing 38 million, some lawmakers see a failure by Washington to act as untenable. Last week, the House passed a $3 trillion virus relief package, but the Senate has yet to act. The Senate is trying to fast-track an extension of a popular small business lending program, but McConnell has said new proposals would be considered next month. And senators have left town until after Memorial Day.

LONDON (AP) — British researchers testing an experimental vaccine against the new coronavirus are moving into advanced studies and aim to immunize more than 10,000 people to determine if the shot works. Last month, scientists at Oxford University began immunizing more than 1,000 volunteers with their vaccine candidate in a preliminary trial designed to test the shot’s safety. The researchers estimated that if all goes well in their ongoing trials and the vaccine proves to be effective, it might be possible to make a decision about wider use by the fall or early 2021.

LONDON (AP) — People arriving in the U.K. will have to quarantine themselves for 14 days and could be fined 1,000 pounds,or $1,220, if they fail to comply. The British government says the quarantine will start in early June and will apply to arrivals from everywhere except Ireland. There are likely to be exemptions for some travelers, including truckers and medics. The measures have sparked confusion and criticism from airlines, airports and lockdown-weary Britons wondering whether they will get to take a vacation aboard this summer. Britain is introducing its quarantine just as many other European countries are starting to open up again.
