TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The city council president in New Jersey's capital city has apologized for using an anti-Semitic trope while discussing actions taken by the city's Jewish attorney.

City Council President Kathy McBride said at Tuesday's council hearing she was sorry for insulting anyone.

McBride's comments were initially made in a closed-door council session. They became public after The Trentonian newspaper obtained a recording.

On the recording, McBride expresses concern over a city legal settlement with an injured woman.

She said she was sad the city's legal department had been able to "wait her out and Jew her down" into accepting a smaller amount of money.

The settlement had been overseen by city attorney Peter Cohen.

Numerous politicians had condemned the comment, saying it reflected a pejorative stereotype of Jewish people as stingy.
